Visual Echo: A Greek Packaging Paradigm

Visual Echo explores the possible communal visual principles within the Greek packaging design of the period 1910-1960 that could be distilled and constitute a certain typology. A multidisciplinary BA thesis-project that focuses specifically on Greek Packaging Design after reviewing 200 packaging items collected by E.L.I.A. [The Hellenic Literary & Historical Archive]. The goal was to identify and codify the visual elements that are interpreted as “Greek”, and then, based on my findings, design objects. The design outcomes created for the project were a publication and a conceptual puzzle - a souvenir.

Souvenir

The souvenir was based on the research findings and inspired by the principles analysed in the Sample Book. It was designed in the form of a puzzle consisted of cubes. Each cube side visualises and corresponds with one of the publications of the Sample Book. The overall message was to take back home the visual essence of Greece. Through unfolding, experimenting and combining the cubes on the map, each time the user creates a unique version of their own individual interpretation of Greece.

A variety of different techniques were used in the design process such as silkscreen, linocut, decoupage, stamp and vinyl.
